Getting out on the water is good for the soul, and body!

Water sports are becoming increasingly popular, with more people realising the physical and mental health benefits of activities like kayaking, sea swimming and other water sports. There are a huge amount of studies that show the positive impact that engaging in various kinds of water sports can have on a person’s mental health.

Kayaking is an activity that works a range of different muscles, while providing the opportunity to explore new areas and uncover different ecosystems. Being outside in the fresh air, surrounded by nature, has been shown to increase levels of endorphins in the body, which can help to reduce stress and anxiety levels, and give a sense of contentment and relaxation.

Sea swimming is also a great way to reduce stress levels. Swimming in cold or warm water can trigger a response in the body similar to that experienced through anti-inflammatory drugs, which over time can reduce stress levels, improve mood and improve overall wellbeing. The physical exercise involved in sea swimming also helps to burn calories, reduce cholesterol levels and increase heart rate, providing further health benefits.

In addition to the physical benefits, the act of getting out in nature and participating in activities such as sea swimming can act as a form of mindfulness. Being mindful involves focusing on the present moment and being aware of one’s feelings and physical sensations, helping to clear the mind of intrusive thoughts and worries.

Water sports such as surfing and paddleboarding also provide great mental health benefits. The physical exercise involved helps to boost the cardiovascular system, while being in the water can help with focus and concentration. The adrenalin rush associated with surfing, kayaking and paddleboarding is another way to combat stress levels and improve mental wellbeing.

Overall, participating in various water sports can have a positive impact on a person’s mental health. Kayaking, sea swimming and other activities provide both physical and psychological benefits, which can help to reduce stress levels and anxiety, improve mood and increase overall wellbeing.
